The engineering machinery industry has grown through ups and downs

 Since the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, China's engineering machinery industry has entered a period of rapid growth. Lü Ying, director of the Statistics and Information Department of the China Construction Machinery Industry Association, said that despite the impact of the 2008 global economic crisis and the large-scale entry of foreign brands into the Chinese market, the rapid development of China's engineering machinery industry remains unchanged, growing steadily amidst fluctuations.

  Industry scale continues to expand

  Lü Ying told reporters that China's engineering machinery industry started relatively late, with rapid development occurring after the reform and opening up. The 10 years since the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China have been a golden period for the rapid development of China's engineering machinery industry. Chinese engineering machinery manufacturers have learned from advanced foreign experience, been brave in exploration, constantly innovated, and rapidly expanded in scale.

  A set of data clearly reflects the development changes in China's engineering machinery industry over the past 10 years: In terms of operating income, in 2001, the national engineering machinery industry was only 56 billion yuan, reaching 546.5 billion yuan in 2011, an increase of nearly 10 times. In terms of enterprise scale, in 2001, large engineering machinery enterprises only had annual sales of one or two billion yuan; in 2011, there were 3 enterprises with annual sales exceeding 80 billion yuan, 12 enterprises with annual sales exceeding 10 billion yuan, and more than 100 enterprises with annual sales exceeding 1 billion yuan. It is worth mentioning that since 2006, the annual growth rate of engineering machinery sales has been over 20%.

  Large-scale engineering machinery "Made in China"

  The manufacturing technology of large-scale engineering machinery is complex, the manufacturing difficulty is high, the production batch is small, the value is high, and the operating risk is high. Before the launch of the country's 10th Five-Year Plan, many engineering machinery enterprises did not dare to venture into this field. Due to the needs of national large-scale infrastructure, petrochemical, metallurgical, and power construction projects, the country's 11th Five-Year Plan established the development goal of focusing on the research and development of urgently needed large-scale construction machinery equipment.

  With the support of a series of national industrial policies and fiscal policies, a group of key backbone enterprises can now manufacture 26 types of engineering machinery commonly found in the international market, and their quality is comparable to foreign products. Among them, large crawler cranes, all-terrain cranes, large bulldozers, large concrete pump trucks, and pavers are sold all over the world.

  Market share continues to increase

  The market share of China's engineering machinery products has greatly improved in the past 10 years. Lü Ying introduced that 10 years ago, many machinery products did not exist; existing engineering machinery products had a large gap with international products; the industry scale was small, production technology was backward, and coupled with the large-scale entry of foreign brands, the market share of national brands in the engineering machinery market was only about 5%.

  Lü Ying said that the significant improvement in engineering machinery manufacturing level has greatly promoted the rapid development of large-scale engineering machinery products. After 10 years of development, China's engineering machinery products have developed from nothing to large-scale production, and the output of excavators has greatly increased. Relevant data show that in 2001, China's excavator output was only more than 12,000 units, while in 2011, it was about 160,000 units; in 2001, there were only dozens of crawler cranes, with lifting capacities all below 100 tons, while now the maximum lifting capacity of crawler cranes has reached 3,000 tons; in terms of sales volume, China's engineering machinery product sales ranked first in the world in 2007, and its sales revenue ranked first in the world from 2009 to this year.

  Imports and exports have changed from a deficit to a surplus

  Lü Ying believes that in the past 10 years, many Chinese engineering machinery enterprises have been "going global." Relevant data show that in 2001, China's engineering machinery exports amounted to US$6.9 billion, and imports amounted to US$15.5 billion; in 2011, China's engineering machinery exports amounted to US$15.91 billion, and imports amounted to US$9.05 billion. In addition, many Chinese engineering machinery enterprises have vigorously developed the international market and established reasonably distributed after-sales service bases, parts warehouses, and R&D centers worldwide.

  It is understood that some Chinese engineering machinery products have approached international standards and are inexpensive, making them popular in developing countries. However, Chinese engineering machinery enterprises have relatively low R&D investment, and their integrated technology, key components, and reliability still have a certain gap compared with developed countries.
