How to maintain a printing machine
Published Time:

Cleaning and Maintenance of Ink Rollers (Water Rollers): Generally, the dirt on the rollers can be classified into three categories: ink; crystalline compounds; glaze. The causes and specific compositions of each type of dirt are different. In response to the above phenomena, we propose corresponding countermeasures to solve them.
I. General Printing Methods
1. Ink
⑴. Fresh Ink
Because fresh ink does not stay on the roller surface for a long time, it can be effectively cleaned with washing water.
⑵. Semi-dry Ink
Semi-dry ink stays on the roller surface for a certain period of time, has transitioned from a fixed state to a drying state, and a part of it has entered the capillaries inside the roller. It can be cleaned with a water accumulating agent (there are two types: water accumulating agent for ink rollers and water accumulating agent for water rollers).
⑶. Completely Dry Ink
It has a stronger adhesion to the roller than semi-dry ink, and as the roller continues to operate, more of it enters the capillaries inside the roller. It needs to be treated with a color-changing paste.
⑷ Ink that has been dry for a long time
It is called "dead ink" and needs to be treated with a dead ink remover.
2. Crystalline Compounds
Crystalline compounds are mainly formed by the deposition of calcium from the high hardness of printing water and some paper coatings on the surface of ink rollers and water rollers. Using water roller accumulating agent can effectively remove crystalline substances from the water roller, and using decalcification water can effectively remove crystalline substances from the ink roller.
3. Glaze
After long-term operation, the surface of the ink roller will become very smooth, and the ink transfer performance will severely decrease (no ink, no water), resulting in the inability of the printing machine to operate normally. At this time, it is necessary to use an accumulating paste to treat it to remove the glazed surface. [next]
II. Current Popular Methods and Future Trends
With the improvement of printing technology and the development of China's economy, some traditional cleaning methods will gradually be eliminated, and new cleaning technologies will emerge. Among them, dry ice jet cleaning applied to printing machines has prominent characteristics:
1. First, the dry ice cleaning principle is that dry ice particles as the jet medium are accelerated in a high-pressure airflow and impact the surface to be cleaned. The uniqueness of dry ice cleaning lies in the vaporization of dry ice particles at the moment of impact. The momentum of dry ice disappears at the moment of impact. Rapid heat exchange occurs between the dry ice particles and the cleaning surface. This causes the solid CO2 to quickly sublimate into gas. Within a few thousandths of a second, the volume of dry ice particles expands by nearly 800 times, causing a "micro-explosion" at the impact point. Because the CO2 has volatilized, the dry ice cleaning process does not produce any secondary waste, and only the removed dirt needs to be cleaned up. Its main characteristics are that it is pollution-free and will not cause any harm to cleaning workers.
2. Secondly, the issue of cleaning time. Dry ice cleaning can remove various oil-based and water-based inks and varnishes, clean oil stains, accumulated ink, and dyes on gears, guide rails, and nozzles, avoiding the discharge of hazardous waste and solutions, as well as personnel injuries caused by hazardous solvents.
Unclean printing equipment can lead to serious consequences, such as: dry ink, scale, paper scraps, dust from sprayers, etc. This dirt will damage moving parts. The adjustment tension of chains and clamps exceeds the tolerance range, and ink can cause premature damage to motors. In addition, thick ink, grease, and oil stains will obscure cracks and other problems. Maintaining the cleanliness of the printing machine stems from various reasons. Through clean operation, operators can detect problems early and deal with them in time to avoid greater losses. This is the best way to quickly remove ink, grease, and resin stains. Using dry ice cleaning, one operator can complete the cleaning work that would take 8 hours of manual labor within one hour. Dry ice cleaning can be used on some fragile equipment such as rubber cylinders without causing damage. The improvement in the life and quality of the equipment is very obvious.
Benefits: Reduced downtime — No corrosion to electrical components — No masking — Reduced use of chemicals — Less disassembly — No damage — Can clean hooks and cracks that are inaccessible to manual labor. One cleaning machine can thoroughly clean a four-color printing machine within 20-30 hours. Cleaning a normal printing machine takes about 10 hours. Using two cleaning machines can halve the cleaning time.
◆Rubber Blanket Maintenance
After each printing, the rubber blanket can be cleaned with washing water; if the water roller accumulates water, it can restore the recessed part of the rubber blanket, remove ghosting, and also contains components to remove alcohol residue; the ink roller accumulating water can be used to remove ink and its drying agent from the rubber; for "dead ink" that has been dried on the rubber for a long time, a dead ink remover can be used; the mark-free water is suitable for removing accumulated paper fluff from the rubber and restoring the rubber elasticity.
◆Cleaning the water circulation system
Ink-water balance is a crucial aspect of the printing production process. In the process of using "water"—that is, fountain solution—more attention is paid to the "amount of water," namely the concentration and usage of the fountain solution, while the cleaning of the entire dampening system is often neglected. Due to the circulating use of the fountain solution, components from ink, paper, and other chemicals inevitably enter the circulation system. Over time, this leads to the accumulation of mixed dirt (especially inside the pipes), causing the water tank to become cloudy, bacteria to grow in the pipes, and emitting odors, thus seriously affecting the printing quality. Cleaning the circulation system with plain water is not thorough. It is recommended to use a special dampening system cleaner to fundamentally solve the problem.
